Online Classes

From time to time, it may become necessary for a student to make up a failed class. At GAC, we are extremely interested in options that allow our students to be successful in mastering the required material. Following is information parents and students need to know when faced with the possibility of retaking a class.

Online classes are to be taken only when a student needs to make up a class he or she has failed. Before enrolling in an online course, students and their parents must sign a contract and submit it to Dr. Betty Morris, Dean of Academics, for approval. Failure to do so may result in the student not receiving credit for the course. Parents will be notified when the request has been approved or if more discussion is necessary.

Please keep in mind that GAC is allowing the student to make up the class as a matter of convenience. It is the parents’ responsibility to locate the class, complete the contract and submit it for approval, order tests and arrange for a proctor if needed. Parents should also follow up to make sure that the grade for the course has been forwarded from the institution where the class has been made up to the Registrar for inclusion on the student’s transcript.

A significant requirement for all online make-up classes follows: it is preferred that the final exam for every online class be taken in front of a teacher or an administrator, but in some cases, the student may be allowed to take the exam online. The method by which the exam is to be taken needs to be approved by Dr. Morris.

Please remember that both grades will print on the student’s transcript: the original failure and the make-up class. Some online sites offer an option called credit recovery. GAC no longer accepts credit recovery classes. If a student fails a class, he/she must retake the class.

We have had students successfully complete and receive credit for classes taken from the following institutions. You may want to review offerings from all these sites before making a decision of where to complete the failed course. Some students prefer to make up classes during the school year. As an alternative, students can make up a failed senior high course in a SACS accredited summer school.

Questions regarding make-up classes can be directed to Dr. Betty Morris  (770) 243-2252.
