Congratulations to the 2010-2011 Varsity Wrestling Team as they finished in 3rd Place at the 2011 State Duals Championships this past weekend in Toombs County, GA. The Spartans started the tournament on Friday night matched up with powerhouse and 2011 Traditional State Champs Jefferson. After losing 55-9 the Spartans had a long day ahead of them on Saturday. The Spartans won 5 dual meets in a row on Saturday to bring home the 3rd place trophy. Up first was East Laurens. The Spartans took care of business quickly defeating East Laurens 64-8. Up next was Morgan County, probably the best team we'd face besides Jefferson, which came down to the final match of the dual meet with Zach Feuerbach (160) and Morgan’s Rector. They had just met in the semi-finals of the State Tournament last week and beating a talented opponent two times in a row is pretty tough. Feuerbach came home with a pin though and put the Spartans on top 38-33. Our third dual of the day came from Cook County. The Spartans wrestled well and won 41-26 and moved on to the next round. In the Consolation Semi-finals, the Spartans were matched up with Area rival Lovett. The Spartans had never, in their 17 year history, beaten Lovett. This time the Spartans came home with a big win 40-24. One of the surprises came from Parker Fair (215) who scored an escape in the final overtime to beat the 189 State Champ from Lovett who had bumped up to wrestle Fair. In the Consolation Finals to determine 3rd/4th place the Spartans had to wrestle a solid team in Banks County. Once again, your Spartans, after trailing early and winning several close matches brought home the 3rd place trophy by winning 40-19. The Spartans ended their season 21-8, with a 10th Place finish at the Traditional State Tournament and 3rd Place finish at State Duals Tournament. By far, the best season in Spartan Wrestling history. Having stand-out performances were Will Hemby (140), Caleb Bumpers (119) and Jared Hemmings (171) who were all 5-1 for the weekend while Zach Feuerbach (160) went 6-0. 2010-2011 Varsity Roster 103 Brandon Bradley 112 Carter Clinebell 119 Caleb Bumpers* 125 Trent Scates 130 Parker Embry 135 Will Parker 140 Will Hemby* 145 Ethan Tolbert 152 Dalton Duriez 160 Zach Feuerbach 171 Jared Hemmings* 189 Hunter Martin 215 Parker Fair HWT Brayden Long *Team Captain

The 2011 State Traditional Wrestling Tournament culminated on Saturday night with a well attended finals round with two Spartans, that’s right 2 Spartans, competing for a state championship. That’s a first for the Spartans. Our last finalist was in 2008, Travis Elrod. In the first finals match was Zach Feuerbach at 160 lbs. Zach wrestled Kalin Willhite from Toombs County who came in as the favorite finishing as runner-up last season at state. Although Zach gave everything he had, he finished just short 8-5. In the second finals match for the Spartans, Senior Jared Hemmings at 171 lbs, who placed 4th at last year’s state tournament, was also an underdog to his opponent, returning state champ Forrest Przybysz of Jefferson. Going into the third and final period the score was knotted at 0-0 but didn’t stay that way for long as Forrest escaped quickly and would eventually get a takedown and won the match 4-0. Earlier in the day, Parker Fair brought home the 6th place medal at 215 lbs. The team finished in it’s highest position, 10th place, since 2002 when they finished 7th. I’m very proud of our state placers, state qualifiers, varsity team members, JV guys, coaching staff and the entire wrestling program at GACS. Well done. Finally, congratulations to all nine state qualifiers this year. Here’s how they all finished: 103 Brandon Bradley 0-2 112 Carter Clinebell 1-2 119 Caleb Bumpers 1-2 130 Parker Embry 0-2 140 Will Hemby 1-2 145 Ethan Tolbert 2-2 160 Zach Feuerbach 3-1; State Runner-up 171 Jared Hemmings 3-1; State Runner-up 215 Parker Fair 3-3; 6th Place Team Finish -------------- 10th place
