Choosing a college is an exciting and anxious time for both parents and students as they prepare for this next step in life. College Counseling at Greater Atlanta Christian School operates on the core belief that college admissions is a match to be made rather than a prize to be won. We consider an "appropriate" college choice to be one which matches a student's goals, needs, interests, and abilities. Our counselors meet frequently in one on one settings with students beginning early in the spring semester of the Junior year to help guide students and parents in finding the right match, considering requirements through the testing season in the spring and early summer, and then the application process itself beginning in the fall of the senior year.

STUDENTS AND PARENTS OF THE CLASS OF 2014 OFFICIALLY INVITED TO SPECIAL CASE STUDIES PROGRAM
We are excited to announce the 2013 Atlanta Invitational Case Studies Program, which will be held on Sunday, April 28 here at Greater Atlanta Christian School. We are pleased to be hosting this event for the first time and are hoping for 100% participation from the GAC Class of 2014. Registration begins at 1:45 and the program concludes at 5:00. Participation by each junior is strongly encouraged. Additionally, it is recommended that each student be accompanied to the program by at least one parent.
The Invitational Atlanta Case Studies Program is a unique opportunity for junior students and parents from several of the Atlanta-area private schools to meet with admissions officers from approximately 45 colleges across the country to learn first-hand how college admissions decisions are made.
What happens at the Atlanta Case Studies Program? During the event, participants will be guided by admissions professionals in small committees to ultimately decide which applicants should be admitted to the sample university. This exercise will acquaint you with the college application reading process that the Class of 2014 will experience in the very near future. In order for the program to be effective, students and parents must review sample applications prior to attending the program. After the case studies session, students and parents are encouraged to attend the college fair where they can speak directly to the college representatives participating in the program.
A few items you must do should you wish to attend: - RSVP online by Friday, April 19 using the following link: http://tinyurl.com/d9e5oy
- If you have trouble with this link, please email your college counselor.
- Once registered, attendees will receive a confirmation message. A confirmation email will come later including more information about the event, and a link to download the actual case studies. If registrants prefer to save paper and download the case studies to an iPhone, iPad, or some other electronic device, you may do so.
- Each student and each parent should download and print (or save to an electronic device) a set of the sample applications. You will receive the link to download the case studies when you complete the RSVP. You are expected to read them in advance and bring them with you to the Atlanta Invitational Case Studies Program. The applications average about 15 pages in length, and both the student and parent(s) will need separate copies since they will be serving on different mock admissions committees. If you prefer not to print the packet from home but still want a paper copy, you may request a copy for a $5 fee to cover printing costs from the College Counseling office no later than Friday, April 19. To request a packet, please email your college counselor. Students may pick up their packet beginning Tuesday, April 23rd from the College Counseling office and should submit the $5 fee at that time.
It is rare to get such a valuable glimpse into a process that often seems a mystery from the very people who make the decisions. We are excited to present this unique opportunity that allows for students and parents to engage with a diverse group of admissions professionals, and it is our expectation that we will have a strong showing from Greater Atlanta Christian at the Atlanta Invitational Case Studies Program. If you have any questions about the program, please contact your college counselor. GAC Sophomores and Juniors February 14 - 18, 2013 Greater Atlanta Christian School / Holy Innocents’ Episcopal School Tour Description This five day / four night excursion will introduce you to several colleges and universities. You will have the chance to experience first-hand what college life is all about, and have an exciting and educational time with your classmates and friends. You will visit: Sewanee: University of the South; Vanderbilt University; Belmont University or Fiske University (student choice); Rhodes University; University of Mississippi; University of Alabama; Birmingham Southern College; Auburn University. There will be student led campus tours, meetings with admission officers, campus meals, overnight lodging in hotels, activities, and plenty of sightseeing. Lodging will occur in hotels located near the schools and is based on double occupancy. Activities on previous tours have included exploring the areas surrounding the schools, attending special events, and shopping in malls and markets. Throughout the trip, participants receive helpful information, materials, and tips on how to make the most of the campus visits. The tour will be led by a representative from COLLEGE VISITS; Beverly Choate Dowdy, Greater Atlanta Christian School, and counselors from Holy Innocents Episcopal School, Holly Raiford and Ronnie McKnight. COLLEGE VISITS is directed and founded by Robert Rummerfield, who previously was an admissions officer at The Johns Hopkins University. Since 1991, teenagers, parents, and counselors from across the world have joined our tours. “The Campus Tours that I experienced were very informative. It was great to see the college campuses and go on tours led by current students. Since we went to so many in such a short amount of time, I was able to compare the potential schools. Going on the Campus Tours was a fun and productive way to spend my winter break. Two of the schools I visited I'll be applying to in the fall.” Kevin Steele, GAC Senior Details and registration materials for Southern College Tour

Student Attendance Policy for College Meetings
8/28/2011
Student Attendance Policy for on-campus College Meetings Students must be in the college meeting before 11:40 AM for Monday, Tuesday, and Friday meetings, or by 9:00 AM on Thursdays, to be admitted to the meeting. Students must sign in on the GAC College Counseling Attendance Sheet in order to be excused from Chapel. Otherwise, the office will record the time as an unexcused absence affecting exemption status at the end of the semester. Students will have 5 days to correct chapel attendance if for some reason your name is not on the list of attendees. This issue cannot be revisited at the end of the semester if you still have an unexcused absence, a UA, but claim to have been in a college meeting. Meetings that are scheduled at times other than chapel require permission from your teacher BEFORE the meeting. These are rare but do occasionally occur due to scheduling difficulties. Juniors may attend college meetings only after getting permission from the Counseling Office. Anyone being disruptive during a college meeting will be asked to leave.
