Last summer, Elise received a prestigious invitation to take part as a Research Intern at the Stanford University Social Media Lab. The highly competitive internship was part of a National Science Foundation-funded program at Stanford's Center for the Study of Language and Information. The Social Media Lab conducts research to understand how people interact with social media and the implications of emerging technology on digital communications. As one of 12 out of 700 interns selected, she conducted faculty-mentored research investigating the role of artificial intelligence in public health messaging.
 
"I am interested in the intersection of artificial intelligence (AI) and digital communication, specifically how AI can contribute to effective messaging campaigns for social good. This internship was a tremendous learning experience and meaningfully shaped my understanding of the future of marketing, messaging, and technology. I appreciate this unique opportunity to actively and deeply explore my interests in an interdisciplinary environment, as I have gained exposure to new ideas and seek to draw inspiration across diverse disciplines as I continue research in the future," said Elise.
 
When asked how GAC prepared her for her future career in digital communication and AI, Elise said she was involved in the visual and performing arts. Through GAC’s thorough STEM curriculum (especially in math), she developed quantitative and creative passions which directly translated to her professional interests. "Through the variety of enriching classes and experiences at GAC, I gained a solid foundation and feel equipped to continue to learn and pursue future endeavors. I am so grateful for my time at GAC," said Elise.

The Social Media Lab conducts research to understand how people interact with social media and the implications of emerging technology on digital communications. As one of 12 out of 700 interns selected, she conducted faculty-mentored research investigating the role of artificial intelligence in public health messaging.

Over the course of the internship, she was highly engaged in each step of the research process as her team designed and executed an empirical study analyzing GPT-3 (a highly sophisticated AI model that creates human-like text) and its ability to generate public health messages in the context of COVID-vaccine messaging.

"I am interested in the intersection of artificial intelligence (AI) and digital communication, specifically how AI can contribute to effective messaging campaigns for social good. This internship was a tremendous learning experience and meaningfully shaped my understanding of the future of marketing, messaging, and technology.
