Tips and Tools for Keeping Kids Safe Online

Have you felt overwhelmed by parenting in a technology-focused society? Does it feel like you have no idea where to start when it comes to keeping your kids safe online?

Here are a few tips to get you started:

1. Be mindful of what YOU share!

Our kids look at everything we do. This includes how we act with technology. Remember to be intentional in what content you post, who sees your posts, and how often you post.

2. Talk about it!

Don’t be afraid to talk to your kids about hard topics. There will be topics you think “Oh
they aren’t old enough yet,” or “they will be fine if I don’t talk to them about it.” But,
technology is rapidly opening doors for children to learn about mature topics online and through peers. Your kids need you to have those hard conversations with them.

3. Be a safe place for your children.

One of the greatest ways you can love your kids is by allowing them to feel that they are
safe to share anything with you. This may be the most crucial way we can keep our kids safe in a world of technology. Create moments of vulnerability with your children that encourage them to share uncomfortable and hard realities they might be dealing with. (Be able to invite them to celebrate the fantastic moments of life with you too!)

4. Help your kids process what is real and what isn’t.

Technology brings a lot of comparison, FOMO, and unrealistic expectations. By growing
up in a world where technology is prevalent, the younger generation needs to be
reminded of what is real and what isn’t. Your child needs you to help teach them how technology can warp our way of thinking. Still, they also need you to help them process the moments when technology brings a social challenge, like being uninvited to a sleepover or feeling left out of a birthday party.

5. Parental Controls

A tangible way you can help protect your children is by adding parental controls to apps and other online platforms. By setting controls like this, you are allowing yourself a safety net regarding technology.

6. Time limits, filters, and location tracking

Other helpful tips for tangibly creating a safe online connection for your child are enforcing time limits, filters, and location tracking. Creating these boundaries will ultimately help your kids have a healthier relationship with technology, but you will also remain in control of the technology your child uses. Boundaries may not feel good to our kids, especially tweens and teens. Stay firm in your boundaries, knowing that you are making the best decision for your children’s health.
