Greater Atlanta Christian grad and Buford native Cindy Brogdon was announced Thursday as a member of the Southeastern Conference 2018 Class of Women’s Legends.

The annual honor recognizes one prominent student-athlete, coach or administrators from each of the 14 SEC schools. The selections will be honored during the Feb. 28-March 4 SEC Women’s Basketball Tournament in Nashville, Tenn.

Brogdon is Tennessee’s selection — she played basketball for the Lady Vols from 1977-79. She already is a member of the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame, the National Federation of State High School Associations Hall of Fame and the Gwinnett County Sports Hall of Fame.

As a high-schooler, Brogdon led GAC to three state championships and a state runner-up finish as a sophomore. The high-scoring guard was named state tournament MVP each of those four seasons.

After high school, Brogdon played two seasons at Mercer — as the first Georgia female to earn a full athletic scholarship — and averaged 30.1 points. She then transferred to Tennessee, where she led legendary coach Pat Summitt’s team in scoring for two seasons and was a two-time All-American. She also was the youngest member of the first women’s U.S. Olympic silver medalist team in 1976.

Brogdon scored 2,672 points at GAC and 3,204 more points in college. The majority of her points came on deep perimeter shots, even though she played before the 3-point line.
