The 2024 Slayton Skills Camp was a success!
The event was hosted by GAC alumni Darius Slayton, a wide receiver for the New York Giants (GAC Class of 2015), Micah Abernathy, a safety for the Atlanta Falcons (GAC Class of 2015), and Kalif Raymond, an All-Pro punt returner and wide receiver for the Detroit Lions (GAC Class of 2012).
In addition to Slayton, Abernathy, and Raymond, Davis Mills (GAC Class of 2017) (Houston Texans) and Chris Hinton (GAC Class of 2019) (Los Angeles Chargers) are current NFL players. Overall, GAC has five alumni who are currently playing in the NFL. According to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution (September 2023), Norcross High School is the only other high school in the state of Georgia with five current NFL players.
The Slayton Skills Camp was open to the community for all athletes ages 12 to 16 (rising 6th-graders to rising 10th-graders). This unique opportunity allowed young athletes to learn football fundamentals, strengthen their skills, and gain insights from professional NFL players, all free of charge. Slayton’s camp aimed to inspire young athletes to pursue excellence on and off the field. The 2024 camp is sold out, but GAC hopes to host it again next summer.
Three other GAC Football alumni helped coach various drills during the camp:
- Paul Carothers (GAC Class of 2015) who played for Navy Football from 2015 to 2019.
- Kyler McMichael (GAC Class of 2018) who has played for multiple NFL teams (most recently the Arizona Cardinals)
- Jackson Hardy (GAC Class of 2020) who finished his final season playing quarterback for the University of Richmond last year.
NFL cornerback Casey Heyward also joined the Slayton Skills Camp staff this year.
