Denzell Watkins Sets School Record as Spartans Close Historic 2025 Season

GAC Football closed the 2025 season with a moment that will stand in the program’s record books, as senior defensive back Denzell Watkins set a new school record for the longest interception return during the Spartans’ Elite 8 victory over Athens Academy.

Early in the second half, with Athens Academy opening the half on offense and driving to cut into the deficit, Watkins jumped the passing lane and returned the interception 93 yards, flipping field position and momentum in one decisive play. The return put GAC firmly in control and helped push the Spartans’ lead to 35–7, sealing the outcome and punctuating a dominant playoff performance.

The record-setting return served as a defining moment in a season marked by disciplined defense, explosive playmaking, and postseason success. GAC’s Elite 8 win also propelled the Spartans into the GHSA state semifinals for the first time since 2020, underscoring the growth and resilience of the program throughout the year.

As the 2025 campaign comes to a close, Watkins’ historic interception return stands as a fitting symbol of a season built on preparation, execution, and championship-level moments.
