GAC creates Housing System for Middle School Students

To encourage connection and community engagement, the GAC Middle School leadership team launched a housing system this year. Sixth through eighth grade students were randomly sorted into five houses during their annual Fall Middle School Retreat.

The five houses, Terra, Gale, Ember, Torrent, and Lumen, are each rooted in biblical principles, with a scripture verse serving as the foundation for every group. The goal of the program is to help students build a deeper community during a season of life when finding connections can often feel challenging.

Each house is led by one 8th grade boy and one 8th grade girl, along with a class representative from both 6th and 7th grade. These leaders are selected through a house-wide vote after participating in an interview process with teachers and administrators. Throughout the year, houses earn points through positive behavior, friendly competitions, service projects, and other community-building activities. While one house will ultimately finish with the most points, the hope is that the greatest “win” will be the friendships and sense of belonging students gain along the way.

“Our goal for the House System was to build a stronger sense of community and connection for each student. It’s like having a family within the Middle School.” - TJ Dixon, Middle School Principal

The inaugural sorting ceremony was an unforgettable moment for our Middle School community. Students came to the stage in groups of ten, selecting a sealed envelope from the “Chest of Destiny” that revealed the house they would join. As each envelope was opened, cheers erupted and students were welcomed into their new community. The excitement was impossible to miss. It was felt (and heard) across the entire GAC campus.
