GAC Varsity Boys Tennis Wins Fourth Straight State Championship

The Greater Atlanta Christian School varsity boys tennis team continued its historic run Wednesday, May 13, capturing its fourth consecutive GHSA State Championship with a 3-0 victory over Darlington in the GHSA Private State Finals at the Rome Tennis Center.

GAC powered through the state playoffs with victories over Weber, Walker, Wesleyan, and Darlington en route to the title. In the championship match, Freddy Dougah and Simon Dong earned the opening point at No. 2 doubles with a 6-2, 6-1 win, while Santi Bisogno and Brady Gessner followed with a 6-3, 6-1 victory at No. 1 doubles. Senior Marcello Bisogno clinched the championship with a 6-2, 6-0 win at No. 3 singles.

Under the leadership of head coach Brett Harte, the Spartans secured the program’s 11th overall state championship and matched the school’s previous run of four straight state titles from 2005-08.

The championship was the culminating moment of a dominant and undefeated 27-0 season for the Spartans, who also established themselves as one of the top teams in the country with a National Championship earlier this spring at the National High School Tennis Championship Powered by USTA in Orlando, Florida. The nation’s top eight high school programs were invited to compete in the prestigious event, including American Heritage School (Fla.), Baylor School (Tenn.), Sidwell Friends School (D.C.), Punahou School (Hawaii), Saint Andrew’s School (Fla.), Harvard-Westlake School (Calif.), and McCallie School (Tenn.).

GAC cruised past the competition at the National High School Tennis Championship with victories over Baylor (5-2), Punahou (5-2), and Saint Andrew’s (7-0) to advance to the title match against top-seeded American Heritage. The finals were played on the College Courts at the USTA National Campus. GAC swept all three doubles matches in college-format play and clinched a commanding 4-0 victory over American Heritage to secure the national title.

Later in the spring, GAC added another marquee win to its résumé with a 3-2 victory over nationally-ranked McCallie School at GAC.

With an undefeated season, victories over multiple nationally-ranked opponents, a national championship, and a fourth straight state title, GAC’s varsity boys tennis program cemented themselves as the premier high school tennis team in the nation.
