The Varsity Volleyball program is in the middle of a historic run, and new head coach Crystal Brittain has played an integral role in that success. The Spartans won the 2021 GHSA 3A Championship but were subject to a move up to 5A after a series of GHSA reclassifications.
Coach Brittain joined the GAC volleyball staff as an assistant coach in 2022 and then helped the Spartans clinch the GHSA 5A State Championship. The Spartans defeated Chattahoochee High School in five sets to clinch their second straight championship. At the conclusion of the 2022 season, Rachel Vanderpol stepped down as the head coach and Coach Brittain took control as head coach.
In her first year at the helm, Coach Brittain led the Spartans to a 34-8 (7-1 in region) overall record. Some highlight victories included winning the Region 6-5A Championship (GAC's third region championship in a row). And a victory in the Final Four versus Dalton High School. The Spartans fell to McIntosh High School in a tough championship match that lasted five sets. Although the team didn't clinch another title, the team as a whole still brought home several awards.
Coach Brittain was named as the GVCA/AVCA Coach of the Year for 5A. She will coach the All-Star team in their match on November 12th at 3 PM. She was also named as the Gwinnett County co-coach of the year for 5A.
Senior outside hitter, Gracie Rose, was named as the Region Player of the Year. Rose finished the season with additional honors including being named as the GVCA/AVCA 5A Player of the Year. Rose also was named as the Gwinnett County Player of the Year.
Senior libero, Maddie Burrough, was named as the Region 6-5A Defensive Player of the Year. She joins her teammate Gracie Rose as a 1st team member of the GVCA/AVCA All-State Team. Burrough was also a 1st Team member of the All-Gwinnett County team. Burrough signed with Harding University to continue her athletic career.
