Katie Irwin '15 is UGA Amazing Student

Katie Irwin, GAC Class of 2015, was honored as UGA's Amazing Student for this week and deservedly so! An exemplary student with an impressive resume even as a junior in college, she epitomizes the GAC student, one who is guided by faith, courageous in character, engaged in service, empowered by strengths, driven by passions, shaped by experiences, inspired by vision, motivated by mission, and committed to action.

Since starting at UGA, Katie has been involved with everything from running her own projects in the Developmental Neuroscience Lab in UGA's Cellular Biology Department to presenting her research at multiple symposia (including the International 2018 Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology Annual Meeting). Her research interests have taken her as far as Dublin, Ireland, where she worked as an intern studying neurodegeneration at the Global Brain Health Institute at Trinity College, and UCSF's Memory and Aging Center. But her work close to home is also remarkable: she has served with the Undergraduate Neuroscience Organization as Vice President and Co-President for three years, taught neuroscience to local third-graders, helped raise money for the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research, and volunteered at the Athens Regional Medical Center and St. Mary's Hospice House. Read more of her adventures. Katie is the second GAC student to be featured in the last two years. Last year, Elizabeth White earned this honor.
