(April 18-April 29th)
Baseball:
Our Varsity Baseball team (23-5, 13-1 in region play) faced Redan High School on Friday night. The winner would take home the Region Championship. The Spartans were buoyed by a dominate pitching performance by senior Rhett Wells (6 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 8 Ks). Junior Aaron Hobson (1-4, HR, 2 RBI), junior Camden Helms (2-3, HR, 2 RBI), and sophomore Conrad Cason (2-3, 2 RBI) led the way for the Spartans offensive attack. Timely hitting along with excellent pitching resulted in a 7-0 win over the Redan Raiders. This marks the second consecutive region championship in Region 5-AAA, and the first under new head coach Josh Lee.
Boys Lacrosse:
The Varsity Boys Lacrosse team wrapped up their season last week. And with the conclusion of play on the field came the end of Head Coach Tim Ball's coaching career in lacrosse. Coach Ball has led Spartan Boys Lax for 15 years. He finishes his Lax career 161-109-1. Over the last decade and a half, Coach Ball posted 13 winning seasons. His teams reached the playoffs eight times, the Elite 8 seven times, the Final 4 four times and played in the State Championship in 2018. He was DiVarsity Coach of the Year in 2016, the GDP Coach of the Year in 2017 and 2021 and recently earned the Positive Athlete Coaching Award for Gwinnett County for 2022. Fifteen of his players have gone on to play lacrosse in college.
“Any success that I’ve had can be attributed to the tremendous support I’ve received from players, parents, GAC, the assistant coaches that have been by my side and … even more, the Lord who placed this opportunity in front of me,” Coach Ball said. “The lives that I’ve had the privilege to cross paths with and the memories I’ve had will be carried with me and cherished the rest of my life.”
