Special Olympics Leaves Lasting Impact on Student Volunteers
Special Olympics Leaves Lasting Impact on Student Volunteers

For more than 20 years, the Greater Atlanta Christian School’s National Honor Society and Beta Club have proudly hosted the Special Olympics on GAC’s campus, welcoming students with intellectual disabilities from surrounding schools for a day filled with sports, celebration, and connection.

For two days of the year, the Spartan Stadium transforms into a space of athletic activity, fun challenges, and laughter as the athletes compete and student volunteers cheer them on. They spend the day connecting with each other in fellowship and competition, ending the day with an awards ceremony to celebrate the athletes.

Tammy Hughes, Director of Beta Club, says “This event is a great way for us to serve the community and participate with a great organization to celebrate these Special Athletes—and it gives our students a chance to get outside themselves and serve others.

For GAC students, the day represents more than volunteer hours—it’s a powerful opportunity to connect with others in a meaningful and personal way. Although created for the guests who come to campus, the Special Olympics impacts our student volunteers just as much.

“You, my brothers and sisters, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the flesh; rather, serve one another humbly in love.” Galatians 5:13-14
