Students Lead Annual Can-A-Thon at Greater Atlanta Christian School

Supporting the 11Alive/Salvation Army Can-A-Thon has been an annual school-wide tradition at Greater Atlanta Christian School (GAC) since 2012. This year, the GAC student body came together to donate 28,300 non-perishable food items to the Salvation Army.

The food collected will assist families struggling with food insecurity in the Gwinnett County community and beyond, not only to fill stomachs but also to nourish souls.

On collection day (Friday, December 5), student service and leadership groups from every GAC school level efficiently collected, counted, boxed, packed, and delivered food to the Salvation Army. The GAC Concert Choir provided festive Christmas music, creating a joyful atmosphere as volunteers worked.

Throughout November, students and families, from infants to 12th grade, rallied their efforts in various ways to accomplish their goals. Competitions and celebrations spurred the number of food items donated to grow.

"When student leaders take ownership, great things happen. The Can-A-Thon is a part of who we are at GAC," Justin Bagwell, Director of Christian Life, said.

GAC Senior and Service Prefect Makenzie Griffin said, "I love how the GAC community comes together and rallies for things like the Can-A-Thon. It bonded us as a school when we saw what we could accomplish when we all came together."

The Prefect System at GAC is comprised of seniors selected during their junior year who actively serve the school community. Prefects lead by example through service, mentorship, and involvement in school life, helping maintain a culture of respect, unity, and responsibility on campus.

As the GAC community celebrates this season of giving, the success of the Can-A-Thon serves as a reminder of the true spirit of Christmas — sharing God's love through generosity and service to others. Merry Christmas from Greater Atlanta Christian School.
