After an epic double overtime battle at Jefferson High School, the GAC Varsity Girls soccer team defeated Jefferson High School 4-2 in PKs to advance to the 2024 AAAAA State Championship match.
The GAC Spartans (16-3-1) (5-1 in Region) traveled on the road to face the top-ranked Jefferson Dragons (18-1-1). GAC took the lead early in the match thanks to a goal by sophomore Margo Pritchard. The Spartans led for the entire match until Jefferson scored with six minutes remaining in regulation. This led to two overtime periods, and the score remained tied at 1-1 after both sessions.
A chance to compete in the state championship match came down to penalty kicks. Riley James gave GAC a huge advantage after she saved Jefferson's second PK attempt. Margo Pritchard, Reese Black, and Sophia Asiain knocked in their Pks to give the Spartans the lead. Another miss by Jefferson gave senior Isa Moreno an opportunity to send GAC to state. Moreno calmly nailed the shot and the Varsity Girls Soccer team advanced to the championship match for the 6th time in program history.
GAC heads back to the title match for the first time since 2022 and they will face Cambridge High School at Duluth High School. The match will begin at 5 PM.
