Victoria Huynh and Mary Lynn Huett are STAR Student and Teacher

Senior Victoria Huynh and Teacher Mary Lynn Huett were recently honored at the Gwinnett County’s annual STAR Student and STAR Teacher recognition luncheon. This honor comes as a result of Victoria earning the highest score on the SAT and being in the top 10 percent of her class.

Each STAR Student picks a teacher who has made a significant impact on his or her life or education to be his or her STAR Teacher. For her teacher, Victoria chose Mary Lynn Huett, her AP Chemistry Teacher and Mock Trial coach. “AP Chemistry with Mrs. Huett is the single hardest class I have taken during my career at GAC,” says Victoria. “There were a lot of tears, but I came out of that class a better student. No matter what, Mrs. Huett has always been honest with me: if I do something well, she’ll tell me, and if my answer is poor, she’ll tell me that too, and for that, I’m incredibly thankful.”

Says Mary Lynn about Victoria: “Without question, Victoria is committed to learning, growing from experience, and jumping over any hurdle put in her path. Victoria takes full responsibility for herself, and it impresses me so much that she never lets a less-than-perfect performance slow her down. She has demonstrated time and time again that she will grow from constructive criticism and maintain a positive attitude toward a challenge.” Regarding her performance on the Mock Trial team, Mary Lynn has this to say: “Victoria is typically soft-spoken, courteous, kind, and always respectful—but it is really fun to see her in action in the courtroom! As with everything else, Victoria thrives under pressure, plays to win, and can focus all of her energy on bringing her best every time she steps in front of a judge. Last year she earned an Outstanding Attorney award from the competition judges, and it objectively was well-deserved.”

Victoria is a talented student who has made a significant contribution during her time at GAC. She earned the Premio de Oro (National Spanish Exam), Frederick Douglass & Susan B. Anthony Award, Georgia Certificate of Merit, and was a National AP Scholar and National Merit Semifinalist. At the Literary Team competition, she was 2018 region champion and state runner-up for the Argumentative Essay. As part of Mock Trial, she served as Lead Plaintiff Attorney, is GAC’s UNICEF Chapter Co-Founder and Co-President, and has been a part of Envirothon and Symphonic Band.

Victoria has received acceptance at Georgia Tech and UGA and is waiting to hear back from a number of other colleges.
