Congratulations to our 2024 GHSA AAAAA State Champions: GAC Varsity Girls Soccer!
The Spartans (17-3-3) finished in second place in Region 6-5A behind Cambridge High School (14-3-4). GAC previously lost to the Bears 3-1 during the regular season. The state title came down to a rematch between the two schools.
In the Final Four, GAC pulled off the upset over Jefferson High School. That match came down to penalty kicks. The Spartans prevailed thanks to a crucial save by goalie Riley James and a penalty kick by senior Isa Moreno.
Fast forward to the state championship and the same story unfolded. GAC led 1-0 thanks to a penalty kick by Isa Moreno, but Cambridge quickly answered. The match entered overtime tied at 1-1. After enduring a back-and-forth contest for 20 extra minutes of play, it all came down to Penalty Kicks.
Margo Pritchard, Reese Black, Sophia Asiain, and Isa Moreno all knocked in their penalty shots, while Riley James got the crucial save to help put the Spartans on top of 5A.
"Great opportunities create pressure, pressure is a privilege, and man, we earned every bit of it. This season our theme was “Our Why”. Before our season started, I had the girls each write down their why and keep it in their locker. This concept is wrapped with several questions. Why they play soccer, why is it fun, why you work hard, why is high school soccer special to you, why did you play soccer as a little girl? These questions put in perspective of the basic of game. To have fun. Most of these girls soccer journey started before they could spell champion. But that didn’t matter. Those girls played to have fun. Fast forward to 2024 playoffs. Those girls played for that little girl that at the end of the day. When the opportunity in front of us creates pressure, the journey to that was earned, we must remember, to have fun. Our girls did just that. In moments like this, not every athlete can perform under that pressure… but they did, TWICE," said varsity girls soccer head coach Tia Graves.
Congratulations to our State Champions!
