GAC students in Meredith Baker’s enrichment class have taken on a special project this semester. They have engaged with the Memory Project, a charitable nonprofit organization that invites art teachers, art students, and solo artists to help cultivate global kindness by creating portraits for children around the world who have faced substantial challenges, such as violence, war, extreme poverty, neglect, and loss of parents.
Students are able to use whatever media they like for their creations. Says Ms. Baker: “It is really special how much the students have bonded with the children. Their attention to detail is amazing. I jokingly asked them why they don’t focus this much during my class and they replied, ‘It’s because we want our child to like it!’ That filled my heart with joy. They feel a bond with the children just by studying their face. Enrichment time has become something my students look forward to each week! Honestly, it is my fuel each week as well.” The portraits students are working on will be sent to children in Syria in March.
